Embeds and variables

Write messages with variables, format them, and build embeds in the dashboard editor.

Join messages, leave messages, the join DM, the level-up message, the verification panel and ticket messages are written in the dashboard's message editor. This page explains how the editor, the variables and the embeds work.

The message editor#

Each message field of the dashboard has:

  • a formatting toolbar: bold, italic, underline, strikethrough, code, spoiler (Discord markdown);
  • a Variables button that lists the variables of that message, with a search;
  • an Emojis button with your server's emojis and common emojis;
  • a character counter (2,000 characters for a text message);
  • a preview that looks like Discord. Variables show example values in the preview; the bot fills in the real ones.

Variables#

A variable is a name between braces, such as {member_mention}. When the bot sends the message, it replaces the variable with its value.

Welcome {member_mention}! You were invited by {inviter_name}, who now has {inviter_invites} invites.

becomes

Welcome @Alex! You were invited by john, who now has 42 invites.

Rules:

  • Each message has its own list of variables. A variable that the message doesn't support is left exactly as typed.
  • Values are inserted as they are: numbers have no thousands separator (1234).
  • Dates such as {member_created:R} are Discord timestamps. Discord shows them in each reader's language and time zone. They work in the text and in embed descriptions and fields, but not in embed titles, authors or footers.
  • Mentions ping the member or role, except @everyone and @here, which the bot never pings.

The full list, with examples and where each variable works, is on the Variables page.

Embeds#

An embed is a framed Discord message with a colour bar, a title, fields and images.

To build an embed, switch the editor from Text to Embed. The fields are:

FieldLimit
Author, author icon256 characters
Title, title link256 characters
Description4,096 characters
ColourAny colour
Fields (name, value, side by side)Up to 25 fields
Thumbnail, imageAn https:// link, or an image you upload
Footer, footer icon2,048 characters

The whole embed can hold up to 6,000 characters. Variables work in the title, description, fields, author, footer and image links.

Images#

Use Upload to add an image from your computer (PNG, JPEG, GIF or WebP, under 5 MB), or paste an https:// link. Uploaded images are stored by InviteCount on Cloudflare R2 and served from a public link, so Discord can display them.

When Premium ends#

Embeds stay saved. Join and leave messages go back to their text until Premium comes back, and the verification panel goes back to its default message.
